ACITROM AND VITAMIN K

In 1929 doctor Henrik Dam first observed for body to coagulate blood. So, he discovered a vitamin and gave a name ‘vitamin K’ it is called coagulation vitamin ( in European language Koagulation) because it has ability  to coagulate blood. Vitamin k is a fat soluble vitamin. It includes two vitamers vitamin k1( Phylloquinone) and vitamin K2( Menaquinone). Vitamin k1 is made by plants sources and vitamin k2 is made by animal sources. Besides these, there is a synthetic vitamin k3 menadione.

Vitamin k has many functions:

Vitamin k activates the protein fibrinogen that converts into fibrin and it accumulates platelets (tiny blood cells) that help to clot the blood in time of bleeding.

Vitamin k has an important role in bone formation. It plays an important role in prevention of bone loss. Vitamin k modifies the protein osteocalcin which has the ability to bind calcium, can help to form bone matrix.

Vitamin k helps in growth of cells.

Vitamin k prevents the cardiovascular disease. If there is lack of vitamin k, osteocalcin cannot bind calcium. So, there is no chance of formation of bones. So, the result is bones become damaged and free calcium deposits in the arteries and damage the heart.

Sources of vitamin k rich foods:

The main sources of vitamin k are Dark Green Leafy Vegetables and Liver. It also founds in fruits, tubers, seeds, dairy products, meat products, cabbage, spring onion, cucumber etc.

Why vitamin k can be dangerous?

We have discussed earlier  the main function of vitamin K that is blood coagulation (Clotting of the blood). So, we should consume vitamin k rich foods. But we should know why vitamin k can be dangerous for health. When a patient is given acitrom tablet by a doctor then vitamin k rich foods should be avoided.

Acitrom tablet is used for treatment of blood clotting. Artificial heart valves, post heart attacks, deep venous thrombosis (slow blood flow in the leg and pelvic veins), atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat). Mainly it helps to thin the blood coagulation. So, at that time vitamin k should be avoided because vitamin K helps to coagulate the blood. If vitamin K rich foods are given to the patient the blood coagulated and there occurs cerebral attack. But less amount of vitamin K is needed otherwise blood will be more thin. So, some side effects may be seen such as blood in the urine, bleeding, headache etc. In this condition before taking foods you can consult with your dietitian. He or she can help you in this matter.
