Some dos and don't s about food for kidney patients

    • Double toned milk should be used.

    •  Use fresh fruits and vegetables.

    •  You can use butter sometimes but unsalted butter and homemade butter should be used.

    •  Bread made from whole grain is good for health as it is nutritious.

    •  Oats contain fibre known as beta glucans which helps in decreasing LDL (bad cholesterol), increasing satiety, so it is good for health. Fibre helps in controlling blood sugar by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates and preventing constipation.

    •  Onion, garlic can be eaten as these are sources of antioxidants, prevent heart disease.

    •  For cooking rice bran oil should be used. It enhances the excretion of bile.
  • Buffalo’s whole milk and its products such as channa, curd, ice- cream, condensed milk etc should not be used.

  • Avoid oxalate rich foods.



  • Dalda, banaspati, ghee, margarine should not be used.

  • Sweets like molasses, ice – cream, chocolate, jam and jelly should not be used.

  • Do not eat cakes, pizzas, pastries etc.

  • Avoid dry fruits and nuts like raisin, almond, cashew, ground nuts.

  • High sodium content foods like meat, fish, eggs, liver and should be used in restricted amounts. Shell fish should not be used.

  • Horlicks, carbonated drinks, alcoholic drinks, caffeine, complain etc should not be used.

  • Avoid low sodium salt which is sold in the market.
