Sepsis is a life threatening bacterial infection of the blood. It is also the result of organ dysfunction and tissues injury. Sepsis requires treatment with antibiotics, oxygen and intravenous fluids.
If sepsis is left untreated, it develops septic shock, a serious condition where blood pressure is dropped. Many other complications are noted such as rapid heart rates, low urine volume, mental confusion etc.
It is more common in infants and elderly or people with weekend immune system or conditions such as diabetes, kidney stones, tumours, obstruction of the flow of urine by prostate increase the risk of sepsis.
Diagnosis:
If you have symptoms of sepsis, a blood test should be done to diagnose sepsis confirm.
There is seen low level of oxygen and high level of lactic acid, white blood cells and metabolic waste (e.g.; nitrogen)
Sepsis and lactic acid
In sepsis, patient’s lactic acid level rises when blood flow decreases. The main reason of rising lactic acid is low supply of oxygen to the tissues. As blood carries oxygen to the tissues, lack of blood flow causes lack of oxygen. High level of lactic acid in the body is a life threatening condition called lactic acidosis. This condition can also occur when a person takes met- formin for controlling diabetes in case of sepsis and other conditions. High level of lactic acid in the body is the cause of death. There is increasing the chance of dying. So, patient should be given proper treatment to low the level of lactic acid. So, correct amount of oxygen supply is necessary.
